We have worked ourselves in to a pretty good little groove. Wholewheat pancakes/ oatmeal/whole wheat cereal/ millet cereal and or fruit smoothies. Left-overs for lunch. Beans and rice and vegetables for dinner. #1 specializes in pancakes-so that is also on the menu a few times. #2 specializes in smoothies-so we are also treated in that. #3 specializes in chili-so we have that 2 times a week. It has been fun seeing my boys cook, eat, and thrive on this food from the earth. It is kind of funny how shopping goes these days. I have no problems with label checking, because I just buy whole foods. Rice, Beans, lentils, millet, nuts, wheat, fruits and vegetables. I also started buying more coconut milk. I probably purchase 2 cans a week. I buy the Thai Kitchen brand. It has a ton of fat on top-which we love! I add the coconut milk into morning hot cereals, fruit smoothies, and soups at dinner.
The sugar headache left at about day 4 or 5. We did some smooth sailing for a few weeks. We added spinach to our smoothies and wheat berries in place of hamburger. The kids have gotten used to it.
Deviation
On the 26th we had #4's birthday party. I decided early on that this would be more of a "guideline". So the 26th, the diet went out the window. We had pancakes and syrup for breakfast. We had fast food, burgers, fries, and soda for lunch. We had beans, rice, corn and peas for dinner. But the birthday cake, oh man! The bottom layer was a white sheet cake with m&m's and Reeses pieces mixed in. It had a fudge frosting on top. The second layer was brownies with candy frosting on top. On top of that was chocolate covered marshmallows, Reeses pieces an peanut butter m&ms with sort of a candy land theme. Then we had goo-goo cluster ice cream and rocky road ice cream. It was sort of a "go big or go home" theme. Needless to say we were/are all suffering from our sugar extravaganza. 3 days post sugar high and I have a massive frontal lobe headache. The night of the party I ate one piece of the brownie and one scoop of the ice cream. I also sampled some M&M's, Reeses pieces, and lots of fudge frosting. That night I passed out from a sugar coma at about nine. I slept till 11. I had racing thoughts, ringing ears, rapid heartbeat, and crazy dreams all night long. I was completely amazed at how the sugar effected me, since I used to eat way more sugar than that. In the morning I woke up and made us all some hamburger hash-browns, to try and quickly regulate our blood sugar levels.
Conclusion
The next morning, after throwing out the remaining cake and frosting and sending all of the left over candy with Hubbin to work, the boys and I discussed how we felt. #2 was excited to eat the cake, but after he took his first bite, he decided it wouldn't make him feel very good, so he quite. We all decided that sugar wasn't good for us. But, I don't think that means we will have a sugar free desert at the next birthday party.
